WHEN PEOPLE ARE NOT HEALED
Francis McNutt, in his book HEALING prefaces his remarks with these words: "We need to understand then why people are not healed so that we can understand the kind of faith we need to pray for healing. The best point of view, I think, is to see that 'God's normative will is that people will be healed, unless there is some countervailing reason."
And "… we need to believe in God's healing power and pray for healing, while at the same time realizing that there is a mystery involved and that the person may not be healed" p.249
11 Reasons people are not healed from: Wimber "Power Healing" pg 150-151
- People are insufficiently instructed as to what Scripture teaches about healing. That is they do not recognize their authority and command to heal.
- The healing part of the Gospel is hindered and even made void by the traditions of men. Some say healing was in the past. Others say sickness is redemptive and that God uses it to improve us. And yet others say sickness is God's punishment.
- Some people place a false value to suffering. Some people like to hold on to their suffering. They like to be sick.
- Sin in a person's life. This can block (put a barrier to hearing the Spirit) the person praying or the person receiving. If there is a sin connected with the physical ailment especially resentment in a person's spirit, healing is not likely to take place, unless the sin is dealt with first.
- Not praying specifically for the real problem. This requires discernment and direction by the Holy Spirit. The scriptures teach us to pray specifically not generally and this is certainly true when applied to sickness.
- A refusal to see medicine as a way God heals: Some people want to use supernatural means to heal when the natural is available and effective.
- Not using the natural means of preserving health. If we neglect ordinary means of keeping balance in our lives, if we work too hard, eat an unhealthy diet, don't get enough rest and we get sick we should not be surprised that we have illness. When we therefore, pray for healing and it does not come it is because we need to get our lives back in balance, rest, eat right, etc.
- Now is not the time: God's timing, while often not understood by us, is important in all His dealings with us. Suffering does provide us with a chance to look at ourselves and often exposes faulty attitudes and sins. This takes time to be revealed. Quite often after those things are dealt with, healing takes place. In the meantime we are to persist in prayer.
- God's sovereign will: Some times people are not healed and there is no explainable reason. It doesn't appear that God has some purpose He is going to fulfill or that the sick person is being improved spiritually-healing just does not happen. We must remember that we are dealing with a mystery and that God, in His sovereignty, is not obligated to explain all His actions to us. Just because we follow some formula he is not obligated to do our bidding.
- The major reason healing does not take place regularly is lack of faith, either on the part of the person who is sick, or the people praying for that person
- Faith alone is not enough to secure healing. The faith must be in the Word of God and we therefore have to know what the Word of God says on the subject of healing. We must know what God offers to us before we can expect it from Him. The knowledge of Gods will must precede faith for that will to be done.
Pauls letters contain four specific instances where the sick were not healed imeadiatly:
- Epahproditus a leader in the Church ot Philippi who had traveled to Rome to visit Paul in prison and contracted a serious illness.
- 1 Timothy 5:23 Paul advises Timothy to "stop drinking only water and use a little wine because fo your stomic and your frequent illness.
- Paul's travelling companion Trophimus (Acts 20:4) "I left Trophimus sick in miletus"
- Paul himself Galations 4:13,14 "As you know, it was because of an illness that I first preached the gospel to you. Even thought my ilness was a trial to you,…"
Jesus healed all that were brought to him but at the pool of Bethesda He only healed one man. There were many who needed healing.
Wimber Reasons for lack of healing:
"
- Some people do not have faith in God for healing (James 5:15)
- " Personal, un-confessed sin creates a barrier to God's Grace.
- " Persistent and wide spread disunity, sin and unbelief I bodies of believers and families inhibiting healing in individual members of the body (1 Cor 11:30)
- " Because of incomplete or incorrect diagnoses of what is causing their problems, people do not know how to pray correctly.
- " Some people assume that God always heals instantly and when he does not heal immediately they stop praying.
- "
The whole issue comes down to this-The word of God clearly tells us that healing is available as a part of the atonement and the new covenant, we know that God is willing to heal because Jesus revealed to us the heart of the Father while he was on earth. Now do we believe the word of God.
Although God does not heal in every instance, the vast majority of sick people are healed. It is our job to pray and remove any of the blocks we can discern. It is God that does the healing.
