GOD' GENERAL WILL FOR YOUR LIFE
This is based on Ray Hall's (Pastor at Cross Timbers
Church) Sermon of 28 Dec 02. I have taken the notes I made from his sermon and
augmented them with various passages from the Bible and additional notes. The
headers are his some of the text and passages are mine.
There
is a unique and specific will that God has for each individuals life.
This merges with the general will God has for all of His childrens
lives. God's general will for our lives is to:
Experience a real & living personal relationship
with Jesus
- Our relationship must be with Jesus because he is the
mediator between God and Man.
- For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God
our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of
the truth. For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man
Christ Jesus, (1 Tim 2:3-5)
- If He is our personal Lord then we will walk with Him
and emulate his actions.
- For though I am absent in the flesh, yet I am with
you in spirit, rejoicing to see your good order and the steadfastness of your
faith in Christ.
- As you have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord,
so walk in Him, (Col 2:5-6 NKJV)
- If we love him we will keep his commandments and He
will live in us. "
- "He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he
who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love
him and manifest Myself to him." (John 14:21)
- Those who obey his commands live in him, and he in
them.
- This is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave
us. (1 John 3:24)
Rely on God's power by learning what it is to walk in
His spirit on a daily basis
The Holy Spirit
OurGuide - We find that God has given us (Saints/Christians) His Holy
Spirit. And that the Spirit can give us life and a life of peace.[ 1 Th 4:8, 1
John 3:24.] " the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him." (Acts
5:32 NIV) " but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace; (Rom 8:6
NIV) If we then have the Holy Spirit what are we to do? The New Testament tells
us we are to use the Holy Spirit as our guide; to allow Him to control and
direct us and to follow His leading.
In the New Testament we find the following phrases that
instruct us how to walk in the Spirit:
- Live by the Spirit;
- Live in accordance with the Spirit;
- Walk in the Spirit;
- Be led by the Spirit;
- Be Filled with the Spirit;
- Live in accordance to God with regard to the Spirit;
- Guard with the help of the Holy Spirit;
- Pray in the Spirit;
- Mind controlled by the Spirit;
- Serve in the new way of the Spirit;
- Serve in the newness of the Spirit.
- We are to walk in the Spirit and Pray in the Spirit. "
And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and
requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the
saints. (Eph 6:18 NIV)
- Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with
the Spirit. (Gal 5:25 NIV)
If we are to use the Holy Spirit as our guide we have
to come to know him. We have to take time to listen to him. And we have to
submit our wills, plans and agenda's to Him. We have to practice responding to
Him
- So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not
gratify the desires of the sinful nature. (Gal 5:16)
- For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. (Rom
8:14 NKJV)
Do right by living a life of integrity
In
living a life of integrity a Christian displays to the world that he/she honors
Christ and all of His teachings and that we live for Him. " and He died
for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him
who died for them and rose again.(2 Cor 5:15 NKJV)
The Bible gives us many instructions as to what a life of integrity is:
- :The most obvious starting point is to follow the 10
Commandments. "If you love Me, keep My commandments(John 14:15 NKJV)
- We are told to treat all people with respect, to love
our brothers in Christ and to honor our governing bodies. - Honor all
people. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king. (1 Pet 2:17)
- We must submit to those in authority over us. We are
not to foster or promote evil but peace in our activities. Servants, be
submissive to your masters with all fear, not only to the good and gentle, but
also to the harsh. (1 Pet 2:18)
- Let him turn away from evil and do good;
- Let him seek peace and pursue it. (1 Pet 3:11)
- The Christians dealing with other must always
demonstrate integrity. His word is his bond and he never cheats or takes
unfair advantage of another. " (Mat 5:37 NKJV)
- But let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No.' For
whatever is more than these is from the evil one. " (1 Th 4:6 NKJV)
- that no one should take advantage of and defraud his
brother in this matter, because the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we
also forewarned you and testified.
- A Christian living a life of integrity will be of good
cheer, giving to the poor, lending and helping others expecting nothing in
return. "
- Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit,
hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking, as newborn babes, desire the pure milk
of the word, that you may grow thereby, (1 Pet 2:1-2)
- Let them do good, that they be rich in good works,
ready to give, willing to share, (1 Tim 6:18)
- A part of the life of integrity is the involvement in the Christians
church and the Sunday worship. - 'Every one of you shall revere his mother and
his father, and keep My Sabbaths: I am the LORD your God. (Lev 19:3)
Some times we can learn from the negative. In Romans below we see the
acts of a wicked person, one with out integrity. It would seam logical then to
live a life of integrity that one would not do those things listed below.
" And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them
over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting" being filled
with all :
- unrighteousness,
- sexual immorality,
- wickedness,
- covetousness,
- maliciousness;
- full of envy,
- murder,
- strife,
- deceit,
- evil-mindedness;
- they are whisperers,
- backbiters,
- haters of God,
- violent,
- proud,
- boasters,
- inventors of evil things,
- disobedient to parents,
- undiscerning,
- untrustworthy,
- unloving,
- unforgiving,
- unmerciful;
Those who, knowing the righteous judgment of
God, that those who practice such things, above, are deserving of
death, but not only thoes who do the same but also thoes
who approve of those who practice them. (Rom 1:28-32) [italiacs mine]

Suffer for being right
Christ suffered, Paul suffered and many of the early Christians
suffered. We are told that we will suffer. If we live a Godly life it will not
conform to this world and will be rejected by the world. But we are also
promised that if we are faithful we will be given the crown of life and be
blessed.
- " Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ
Jesus will suffer persecution. (2 Tim 3:12) "
- "Do not fear any of those things which you are about
to suffer.
- Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into
prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. Be
faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life. (Rev 2:10)
- But even if you should suffer for righteousness'
sake, you are blessed.
- Do not be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled." (1 Pet
3:14)
We are even given instructions as to how we should suffer. We are
told:
- Glorify God, and commit our soles to him and not
suffer as an evil doer (do no evil).
- Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be
ashamed, but let him glorify God in this matter. (1 Pet 4:16)
- Therefore let those who suffer according to the will
of God commit their souls to Him in doing good, as to a faithful Creator. (1
Pet 4:19)
- But let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, an
evildoer, or as a busybody in other people's matters. (1 Pet 4:15)
- "For it is better, if it is the will of God, to suffer for doing good
than for doing evil. (1 Pet 3:17)
The
bible tells us that this suffering will strengthen us. " My brethren, count it
all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your
faith produces patience. (James 1:2-3)
Learn to say thank you to God in all situations
The Bible in many places commands
us to:
- give thanks to God. " Continue earnestly in prayer,
being vigilant in it with thanksgiving; (Col 4:2)
-
Through out the Bible giving thanks has been a central element of worship. " I will
praise the name of God with a song, And will magnify Him with
thanksgiving. This also shall please the LORD ....(Psa 69:30-31)
- Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, And into His
courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name. (Psa 100:)
- The Bible also instructs us to proclaim God's good works to others in our
thanksgiving. " That I may proclaim with the voice of thanksgiving, And tell
of all Your wondrous works. (Psa 26:7)
Although sometimes we do not
feel like it we have much to be thankful for. There are the basic blessings that
we should rember:
- God's gift of His Son,
- God's grace, love and forgiveness,
- Our deliverance, from so many things.
- We should give thanks that God is God and that He is
our God.
- Beyond that we are taught that all good things come
from God. So we should be thankful for the many good thing that we have. This
would include beautiful landscapes, our clothing, our shelter, our food, our
friends and many other things that we quite often take for granted.
- As the song says we need to: "count our many
blessings, count them one by one"
- And when we come before Him begin our fellowship with thanks. " Let us
come before His presence with thanksgiving; (Psa 95:2)
The
Bible telles us there are consequences to not giving thanks to God.
- " because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor
were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts
were darkened." (Rom 1:21)Be sanctified and
holy
I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh.
For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, and of
lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves
of righteousness for holiness. (Rom 6:19)
For this is the will of
God your sanctification:
- that you should abstain from
sexual immorality;
- that each of you should know how
to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor, not in passion of lust,
like the Gentiles who do not know God;
- that no one should take advantage
of and defraud his brother in this matter, because the Lord is the avenger of
all such,
as we also forewarned you and
testified. For God did
not call us
to uncleanness, but in holiness. (1 Th
4:3-7)
For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to
righteousness. What fruit did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. But now having been set free from sin, and
having become slaves of God Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us
cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting
holiness in the fear of God. (2 Cor 7:1)
Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord: (Heb 12:14)
so that He may establish your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all His saints. (1 Th 3:13)
Therefore he who rejects this
does not reject man, but God, who has also given us His Holy Spirit. (1 Th 4:8)
Stay pure in your thoughts and relationships (Sanctification) As we are
made in God's image we are called to be like him. We are
called to be holy. "but as He who called you is holy, you also be
holy in all your conduct, because it is written, 'Be holy,
for I am holy." (1 Pet 1:15-16)
The Bible teaches
that we are sanctified by:
- taking ourselves out of the world and putting
ourselves into Gods Word. "They are not of the world, just as I am not
of the world "
- Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. (John
17:16-17)
- We need to surround ourselves with Saints (believers)
and avoid those who are evil. " Therefore "put away from yourselves the evil
person." (1 Cor 5:13)
- " Do not be deceived: "Evil company corrupts good
habits." (1 Cor 15:33)
- Our focus needs to be on the positive and we should
avoid the negative.
" Guard what was committed to your trust, avoiding
the profane and idle babblings and contradictions of what is falsely called
knowledge; (1 Tim 6:20) "
Finally, brethren:,
- whatever things are true,
- whatever things are noble,
- whatever things are just,
- whatever things are pure,
- whatever things are lovely,
- whatever things are of good report,
If there is any virtue and if there
is anything praiseworthy; meditate on these things. (Phil 4:8) As we become
sanctified and crucify our fleshly (human) nature we will display the fruit of
the spirit.
But the fruit of the Spirit is:
- love,
- joy,
- peace,
- longsuffering,
- kindness,
- goodness,
- gentleness,
- self-control.
Against such there is no law. (Gal 5:22-23) We should
keep ourselves pure because it is our calling. There is a consequence if we do
not and there is a reward if we do: "For if we sin willfully after we have
received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for
sins, (Heb 10:26) " , if you have your fruit of holiness, the end, is everlasting life. (Rom 6: 22)
